Willowbank Retreat – Seasonal Garden Redesign & Low-Maintenance Upgrade
This project involved the transformation of an outdated back garden in Oxfordshire, UK, into a vibrant, easy-care retreat. The original layout was dominated by overgrown hedges, compacted soil, and sparse lawn patches. The goal was not only to restore the garden but also to redesign it for year-round use with low-maintenance planting, improved soil, and functional relaxation zones. The result was a versatile and inviting space that offers the homeowners a balance of greenery and usability.
Project Overview
A short intro summarizing the project:
This 200 m² back garden redesign in Oxfordshire breathed new life into a tired and unused space. Over eight weeks, we cleared the overgrowth, enriched the soil, laid a curved lawn, and added seasonal flowerbeds. The final layout combines practical low-maintenance planting with a defined seating area, giving the homeowners a relaxing space that thrives across the seasons.
“Garden design is about balance—structure, texture, and maintenance levels all have to align. By simplifying the planting scheme and refining the layout, we created a garden that feels open and inviting without demanding constant upkeep.”

Our Process
Break down the steps taken:
Site Assessment & Planning
Conducted a survey of soil quality, drainage, and sun/shade distribution.
Designed a layout with three zones: a lawn, seasonal flowerbeds, and a paved seating area.
Clearing & Preparation
Removed old turf, invasive weeds, and overgrown hedges.
Treated and levelled the soil, incorporating compost and organic matter to boost fertility.
Lawn Installation
Laid a curved, premium turf lawn to soften the geometry of the space.
Rolled and watered the turf for immediate establishment.
Seasonal Planting & Bed Design
Introduced low-maintenance perennials such as lavender, hydrangeas, and hostas.
Created seasonal beds for year-round interest and minimal upkeep.
Seating Area & Final Touches
Installed a compact stone-paved seating zone with smooth-cut slabs.
Added clean borders, edging, and seasonal lighting for evening use.
Provided the client with a care plan tailored to seasonal adjustments.
“One of the best investments in a low-maintenance garden is smart plant selection. Choosing perennials that thrive in local soil and weather reduces effort while keeping the space attractive all year.”
